internship

Our eldest son is heading off to college in August. He is a talented, natural at networking, and creative young man. Going to college is no longer a given to getting a good job, let alone a rewarding career. With many experts sharing that maybe college isn’t the best route for talented go-getters in our land of start-ups, do take advantage of a couple of resources to get your high schooler thinking about what they might need to do beyond just going to class upon arriving at university. Networking, internships, and real-life experiences are what the students with an edge do today to get ahead while in college.

I just listened to an excellent interview with a recent Georgetown University graduate who shares his take on making the most of one’s college days. Michael Boll of the Concordia EdTech Podcast does a masterful job of interviewing. As Michael says, if you have a high school student under your roof, have them listen to this podcast.

A second resource is a story in the Washington Post about Jessica Adnani, who directed her drive and perseverance to start her concierge service at the ripe young age 25. Talking about making things happen, Jessica sets a high mark for young entrepreneurs with her focus and effort to expand her initial job into her own company.
